At Bonitas - we are passionate about the role we play in contributing to a better, stronger South Africa. Through various initiatives we aim to have a positive impact on the healthcare of the youth as well as the communities in which we operate.
Corporate Social Investment (CSI) is an integral part of our business and through initiatives and funding to a variety of projects we aim to stimulate and support social economic development and healthcare for our people in South Africa
In 2019 Bonitas embarked on a nationwide project to alleviate the strain on the public healthcare sector with the aim of providing sustainable healthcare services. Bonitas cares for our frontline workers and understand the conditions which some facilities are in.
Maintenance and refurbishment of hospitals and clinics
Keeping South Africans in mind, the refurbishing of Government Hospital wards/clinics was the first step to improving healthcare infrastructure. With over crowded facilities and highly populated communities we understand the importance of having well maintained health facilities..
In an effort to make a contribution to Government's strategic plan for sustainable health solutions, engagements were made with the Department of Health to identify four hospitals or clinics where interventions could be implemented. These were in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo and North West province. The refurbishments and upgrades, completed towards the end of 2019, helped improve the health sector at large.

Supporting Gift of the Givers
During the Durban floods in April 2019, Bonitas donated to Gift of the Givers as they stepped in to help the families that lost their homes during the floods. The Gift of the Givers distributed food parcels and other goods in and around the Durban area to help those who were affected.
In continuing with our notion of being the medical aid for South Africa, in 2020 we continued to strengthen the South African healthcare system. With the healthcare sector taking strain due to COVID-19, Bonitas supported all South Africans through various initiatives.
Donation of baby care packs
Over 18 000 Johnson & Johnson care packs, which are used in the Bonitas baby bags, were donated to the Gauteng COVID-19 donations drive. Most of these items are intended for staff whose hands are chapped due to regular washing and for patients as well. The baby care packs include baby powder, Vaseline, shampoo and baby oil.
Free Virtual Medical Consultations
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic taking the world by storm, it was paramount that all sectors across the country pull together. Bonitas launched a new app where any South African citizen can access free virtual medical consultations.
This feature includes speaking to a GP in the comfort and safety of your own home; receiving medical advice about COVID-19 and any other medical problems that one would usually see a GP for. If any chronic medicine is prescribed during the consultation it will be delivered to your door. All of this is available in the new Bonitas app. An added benefit of the feature is ensuring South Africans stay home without entering any medical facilities, minimising any risk of infection.
Caring for our members - COVID-19
Bonitas realises the impact that COVID-19 could possibly have on its members and has taken the initiative to help all high-risk members stay protected. Through research and following the guidelines issued by the department of health, Bonitas has ensured that all members who fall within the high-risk category receive extra care during these tough times. Approximately 100 000 members will each receive a complimentary hand sanitiser to help them stay clean and safe. Our members will receive these sanitisers through partnership with Afrocentric Health and Pharmacy Direct.
