POPIA Act Consent or Privacy Terms and Conditions

The regulations relating to the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) are now enforceable by the Information Regulator. For this reason, we have revised the Terms and Conditions for processing of your personal information to ensure adherence to all the appropriate compliance clauses of POPIA.

What is POPIA?

POPIA is the comprehensive data protection legislation that obliges organisations to handle personal information by applying specific principles and conditions. POPIA deals with your constitutional right to privacy and the right to access information. POPIA was signed into law on 1 July 2020 to be enforceable by 1 July 2021 and much has taken place behind the scenes in preparation for this deadline.

What does POPIA mean for you?

Bonitas has always been committed to treating member's information in an ethical manner and POPIA provides the legal framework and requirements for this treatment. All medical aids, including Bonitas, are now legally obligated to deal with member information with far more diligence than ever before. This includes how and why information is collected, processed, shared, stored and accessed.

Please note: POPIA changes do not affect any terms and conditions of your current medical cover with the Bonitas. It will only apply to how we are required to process your personal information which has been standard practice for some time already.
